In June of 1963, Navy LTJG David P. Grow was killed in the line of duty. His mother, Beatrice “Bea” Grow decided to pour herself into charitable work to honor her son by dedicating her life “to relieve the suffering and distress of the poor, indigent, and sick, and promote the advancement, and general well-being of mankind.” Bea founded the Pensacola Charity Volunteers under the motto, “wonderful things happen when you open your heart.” A year later, the Charity Volunteers opened a Resale Center, where proceeds were donated to support local civic endeavors. By 1975, the store was generating at least $14,000 annually for charity. By 1983, the Pensacola Charity Volunteers had raised nearly $500,000 to support more than 100 local charities and youth organizations. After Bea Grow’s death at the age of 75, the Pensacola Charity Volunteers decided to honor her legacy by establishing this scholarship at PJC in 1988, to support students in disciplines that serve humanity.

Award amount: $250. To be awarded to a deserving local high school graduate majoring in a discipline that serves humanity, for example, counseling, nursing, medical, social work, etc. The student must have financial need, but not necessarily as determined by federal criteria. The recipient must have a minimum 2.5 GPA and enrolled part-time or full-time. Students may only receive this award once.

How these are worked out
  • Our grade. From three facts the sponsor published. How few can apply: one high school or city 3 points, a county 2, the state 1, the whole country 0. How much it pays: $10,000 or more, or at least half of tuition, 3; $2,500 or more 2; $1,000 or more 1. Paid again in later years: 1. A is 4 points or more, B 3, C 2, D 0 or 1.
  • Conditions to meet. The conditions the sponsor published, each listed under Who can apply. More conditions means a smaller field, which is good news if you meet them.
  • None of it is a chance of winning. We do not know how many people apply or how a sponsor chooses, so we do not publish a percentage. Anyone who does is guessing.
